Quality and safety in the independent healthcare sector 2023
Patient Safety Specialist
The NHS Patient Safety strategy includes the requirement to appoint Patient Safety Specialists (PSS). This is a key role within organisations who deliver NHS funded care. Currently there are 67 PSS recorded on the national database including Community Interest Companies, mental health providers, NHS providers and independent healthcare providers. Some organisations have more than one PSS in post. At the time of writing, 12 IHPN members have a Patient Safety Specialist as well as IHPN.
“As a Patient Safety Specialist in the Independent Sector, I am part of a number of networks of like-minded patient safety professionals which gives me the ability to learn from others, and contribute an often unique perspective from the sector. By networking and joining regular webinars and development sessions I can bring examples of good practice back to the organisation and access a wealth of information to support our quality and safety agendas – this has been particularly useful in supporting me to curate the organisation’s patient safety incident response plan as the lead for PSIRF. Being a Patient Safety Specialist gives me the focus and autonomy to advise, lead and support the organisation to improve the quality of our services and the safety of our people.”
