Quality and safety in the independent healthcare sector 2023
IHPN Scotland – Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) Regulation Inspections
During 2021 – 2022 HIS continued to focus on their statutory responsibilities, including inspections, through the lens of public safety. Independent hospital inspections primarily focused on ensuring compliance with COVID-19 guidance with no hospitals during this period receiving inspections to ensure the safe use of Ionising Radiation (IR(ME)R.
During 2022, from seven acute providers within IHPN Scotland membership, HIS completed three onsite inspections within this timeframe, one of which was an IR(ME)R inspection. In 2023 a focused review of SACT services was undertaken with evidence of good governance processes in place. Where areas for improvement are found during inspections, improvement plans outlining recommendations and requirements were put in place.
In addition to the acute providers above, there are three mental health providers and one epilepsy provider within IHPN Scotland Membership. In 2022, mental health inspections were undertaken by HIS at two independent mental health hospitals. Overall, inspectors found evidence of good compliance. Where areas for improvement are found during inspections, improvement plans outlining recommendations and requirements were put in place.
The epilepsy service provider received an inspection in 2023. Areas of good compliance were identified. Where areas for improvement are found during inspections, improvement plans outlining recommendations and requirements were put in place.
