Working in the Independent Healthcare Sector: Patients, Progression, Pace

Conclusion

The healthcare system is undoubtedly going through a challenging period, facing both rising patient demand as well as workforce shortages – all against a difficult economic backdrop. And with the independent sector playing a greater role in the delivery of healthcare services, its absolutely right that its contribution to the employment and development of the healthcare workforce should also be more widely recognised. Not only should independent providers be seen as a legitimate career destination for both current and future healthcare workers, but it should also be fully factored into any wider workforce initiatives in the country by policy-makers and other key stakeholders.

As this report demonstrates, staff in this sector hugely value the opportunities for progression, autonomy in their roles, and a culture that enables them to provide outstanding patient care. The independent sector is not only delivering vital care today but is also demonstrating how flexibility, innovation, and investment in people can strengthen the wider system for tomorrow.

This refreshed research shows that overall staff working in the independent health sector feel:

  • Proud of the care they deliver.

  • Supported and invested in as professionals.

  • Empowered to innovate and improve at pace.

As the role of the sector in the wider healthcare system continue to strengthen, there is real potential for the sector to play a leading role in supporting staff development, expanding capacity, and ensuring patients receive the care they need.

Against this backdrop, IHPN looks forward to working with stakeholders across the system to shape and implement the recommendations of the new NHS Workforce Plan when it is launched, and promote the independent sector amongst the healthcare workforce as a place they can thrive.

The message from staff is clear: in the independent sector they can deliver outstanding care, advance their careers, and shape services with the freedom and agility to make a real difference – ultimately improving the care and outcomes for millions of NHS and private patients every year.
