Responding to the publication of Sir Mike Richards’ interim report into national cancer screening programmes, David Hare, Chief Executive of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network, said:
“We welcome Sir Mike Richard’s interim report into cancer screening services. The UK already lags behind other OECD countries in terms of its scanning capacity, and with the NHS struggling to meet its cancer diagnostics targets it’s vital that we transform the way screening services are delivered to patients.
“As Sir Mike makes clear, cancer screening services need to fit in around the needs of patients, not the other way around. Key to this is to increase diagnostics capacity and to make more efficient and productive use of the diagnostics capability that we have in this country. Innovative partnerships between the NHS and independent sector are already leading to significant investment in scanning services, helping to make screening more accessible to people’s homes and workplaces – a significant resource for cancer screening services to draw on now and in the future.
“We look forward to Sir Mike’s final report later on in the summer and we will continue to work with him and his team to ensure both the existing and potential contribution of the independent sector to cancer screening is recognised in the final report.”
