Quality and safety in the independent healthcare sector 2025

Neurodevelopmental services

Patients and their carers have reported that access to neurodevelopmental services has been challenging for many years, but little, if any, data is published at a national level. While the CQC regulates these services, information published by the CQC is not segmented in a way that supports national-level analysis specifically for neurodevelopmental services.

In response to historic under-provision there has been considerable growth in neurodevelopmental services by independent providers in recent years.

Based on surveying our members, we estimate that over 50% of all NHS ADHD assessments and more than 33% of all NHS autism assessments are delivered by independent sector providers.

83% of IHPN members who deliver neurodevelopmental assessments (including those for ADHD and autism under the NHS Right to Choose Framework) are rated good or outstanding overall. 100% of IHPN members delivering these services are registered with the CQC, but just 46% have been inspected.
