Quality and safety in the independent healthcare sector 2024

Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry

The NHS Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry (BCIR) has been collecting data from providers since 2017 with information published for procedures up to the end of 2023. The BCIR records different operation types:

  • Augmentation
  • Reconstruction
  • Replacement/ exchange of implants
  • Explant
  • Exchange of expander to implant

Overall, 54% of operations were conducted at independent sites, and 74% of patients were treated in the independent sector. The most common procedure is augmentation with 97% of these carried out by independent providers.

Since the BCIR began collecting data we have seen a slight trend towards increasing numbers of augmentations each year with a fall during covid, larger numbers immediately after that period and a reversion to the longer-term trend since then.

The BCIR reports that “between January and December 2023, 12 people had breast implant operations during which anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) was found. The registry cannot identify whether these cases of ALCL are instances of breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).”
