Responding to today’s NHS performance figures, David Hare, Chief Executive of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN), said:
“With today’s figures showing the largest NHS waiting list on record at 5 million, tackling the growing backlog of NHS treatment will need to be a top priority for the Government in the months and years ahead.
“As the Prime Minister has rightly made clear this week, there is a huge task ahead to restore and rebuild the health service so that patients get the care they need as quickly as possible and with almost 50,000 more people in just the last month now waiting over one year, we urgently need a plan in place to bring waiting lists down.
“And given the scale of the challenge, it’s vital that an “all shoulders to the wheel” approach is taken, including a clear role for independent providers who in the last year have delivered over 3.2 million NHS treatments as part of their historic partnership with the NHS, with almost 320,000 NHS procedures delivered by the sector in March 2021 alone.
“Bringing down waiting lists is the public’s number one priority for the NHS and the independent sector is committed to building on this extraordinary partnership and ensuring patients have access to the best possible NHS care, free at the point of use.”
