IHPN Industry Barometer: State of the Sector 2023

Today we released our fourth annual IHPN Industry Barometer: State of the Sector report, which provides a snapshot of how senior leaders across the independent healthcare sector feel about all their key markets and the issues affecting their business.

Practicus sponsored the production of the report, as they have done since it’s inception four years ago, and we thank them for their continued support.

We received responses from 70% of it’s members, which is the highest response rate the report has ever achieved.

From collating and analysing the responses, there were three key findings:

  • Despite pessimism about the UK economy, independent healthcare providers have increasing positivity in all its 3 key markets – domestic self-pay, PMI, and NHS funded. The positivity has increased across the four years that the Barometer has been run.
  • Workforce continues to be the greatest challenge and area of concern for independent healthcare providers.
  • There is a strong desire from providers that they want to play their part in delivering NHS funded care to reduce the waiting lists in elective, diagnostic and community care, though this is stymied by a perception that the NHS is not fully utilising the capacity and capability of the sector.
