The London Clinic: Radiotherapy Support for NHS Waiting List Reduction
In response to growing NHS waiting lists for radiotherapy, the London Clinic partnered with local NHS trusts to deliver a targeted package of care. The aim was to help patients access timely treatment without disrupting their overall cancer journey. Consultants worked collaboratively across both sectors, ensuring continuity of care and clear communication with patients about the nature of this episode of care within the private setting.
The London Clinic provided the full radiotherapy package, including treatment planning, delivery, and nursing support. Patients were reassured that this arrangement would not affect their long-term NHS pathway, and consultants maintained oversight to ensure seamless integration.
However, working in a collaborative, integrated way had some challenges in particular, the contract scope was strictly limited to radiotherapy. When patients required additional care beyond this—such as inpatient support or management of complications— the London Clinic encountered friction in returning them to NHS services. Explaining contractual limitations to NHS teams was difficult and sometimes perceived as “passing the buck,” despite the agreement that these patients should return to NHS delivered care.
Future agreements should include a clear escalation process with named contacts to ensure rapid reintegration into NHS pathways. While Clinical Nurse Specialist support existed within the NHS, communication channels were not always clear, highlighting the need for structured handover protocols.
Despite these challenges, the partnership was highly successful. Consultants working across both providers ensured continuity of care, and patients understood the scope of their private treatment. After completing radiotherapy, patients were reintegrated into NHS follow-up pathways without disadvantage. This collaboration demonstrated how independent sector support can alleviate pressure on NHS services while maintaining patient safety and quality of care.
