Responding to the NAO’s report on “NHS waiting times for elective and cancer treatment”, David Hare, Chief Executive of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network, said:

“Today’s NAO report demonstrates once again the desperate lack of elective capacity in the NHS which is forcing patients to wait ever longer for vital treatment such as hip replacements and cataracts.

“It’s now been almost three years since the NHS last met its target to treat 92% of elective patients within 18 weeks and the NAO is absolutely right in calling for NHS England and Improvement to urgently set out how the health service will address this declining performance and ensure the right incentives are in place to ensure patients get speedier access to care.

“Additional support will be needed to deliver this however, and it is vital that the significant spare capacity in the independent sector is utilised by local areas to ensure patients can we treated as quickly as possible, including through exercising their right to choose the best care provider for them.”
