In response to the publication of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy, Dr Howard Freeman, Clinical Director of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network, said:

“Safety is the number one priority for independent healthcare providers and we welcome today’s NHS Patient Safety Strategy which makes a clear commitment to ensuring the whole healthcare system, including the independent sector, is involved in moving the patient safety agenda forward.

“As the report highlights, better aligning patient safety standards and the sharing of data between the two sectors is key in driving up quality and safety, and following engagement by IHPN, independent sector providers are now permitted to submit more data to key national safety systems and participate in more clinical audits and there is real momentum behind this work.

“Patients must be at the heart of any patient safety strategy and we look forward to working with NHSE-I and other national bodies to ensure that regardless of where they are treated, patients have access to the safest possible care.”
