Responding to the latest NHS performance figures published today, David Hare, Chief Executive of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN), said:

“Despite the hard work of healthcare staff across the country, today’s record NHS waiting list of 5.7 million underlines the ever growing challenges patients are facing in accessing NHS care and why recovering NHS performance must now be the government’s top priority.

“As we await the government’s plan for bringing down waiting lists, it is critical that local NHS systems act urgently on recent NHS England guidance to maximise the use of independent sector capacity to both help clear the elective backlog and support the delivery of vital cancer treatment.

“With a tough winter just around the corner and a mammoth challenge ahead in recovering NHS services, patients need to be assured that all available staffed capacity – including in the independent sector – is utilised to get them treated.”
